Muay Thai means impact. In other words, the goal is to generate a lot of energy in the strikes which, can produce the ever wanted knockout. You have to train for that power. You will need to use impact training equipment designed to develop such a high level of power. Training with the Muay Thai shield and the focus mitts are very different. The Muay Thai shield is one of the very best pieces of equipment you can train with to achieve this desired effect. It can optimize your impact training so that you get to most out of your workout. No doubt, it is great gear. There is, however, a difference in training with the shield versus the focus mitts. Focus mitts are not for power, they are for timing and focus, just as the name implies. Focus mitts are for timing and focus, as the name implies. They are not for power. When hitting the shield, you should not be completely still. The holder should, at some point, become firmly planted but the attacker will continue to move with kicks, knees and punches, giving it all the power possible. This is a great drill that is common: The fighter is circled by the holder and then the holder attacks in a frontal mode. The fighter then stops the holder with a thrust kick that is followed by the fighter grabbing the holder's neck and moving him into kicking range. A double kick is then performed on the shield. To protect the holder, the bags are oversized with excess padding that is designed to accommodate the most powerful kicks and knees. There are some nice shields out there. Bad Boy has a nice shield. Their items stem from a BJJ background. They are tough and the Gracies use this brand. Bad Boy is a UFC sponsor. UFC and Century both have the shield as well and both are great products. |
