Modern society is constantly competing for your attention. If it doesn't beep, flash, zoom, or jump out at you, you are likely to miss it, or at least that is what all the designers of electronic gadgets would have you believe. You rush to work, worry over the duties of the day and try to get home before being stuck in a traffic jam. A whole industry known as meditation music has sprung up to help you find a bit of peace and sanity in this intense world.

Most meditation music is instrumental, blending peaceful melodies of piano, violin, and guitar. Often nature sounds of chirping birds, wind rustling leaves in a forest, or ocean waves softly rolling in, are incorporated. Anything to calm you mind and make you take a deep breathe as you unwind.

Doctors have shown that people who suffer from anxiety, stress and other disorders are helped by listening to certain types of music. Often your hear will beat a little slower and reduce your pulse rate. Your breathing will slow to a more resting state, and the tightness in your muscles will begin to loosen. Overall this benefits your mind as well as your body.

The faster the pace, the more meditation music is produced. Massage therapists and day spas pipe in soothing music to help you be more present and enjoy their various treatments. You can find compilations designed for use by yoga instructors, and even doctors.

If you want to take a holistic approach to your health there is a genre called brainwave entrainment music. Brainwave music consists of meditation music mixed with special frequencies called binaural beats, monaural beats, isochronic tones, and harmonic box x. These frequencies induce brainwave states where exist deep relaxation, freedom from anxiety, deep rejuvenating sleep, and so on.

All styles will not work for all people. For some, simple acoustic guitar will do the trick, while others prefer more artificial and other worldly sounds. Spiritual recordings, aboriginal chants, or chirping birds all aid in quieting the mind.

If you want to sample several before purchasing, several websites allow you to listen to snippets of songs from each compilation. You often have the option of purchasing mp3's or cd's.

Since the first note was played or sung, music has been used to set the mood, or tell a story. If you really want to find some solitude and sanity in this crazy world, open your mind and ears to music and meditation. It can be quite an effective remedy for what ails you.
